As region play ramps up around the state, Baldwin County teams jockey for playoff positions

Although Week 4 of the high school football season features no intra-county matchups, there are plenty of intriguing games as region play is ramping up.

Only four Baldwin County teams will host games this week but only Bayside Academy has an away game farther than a trip across the bay.

As always, follow along on social media @GCMSportsAL for all of the live updates from the gridiron Friday nights. Until then, here are three games to keep an eye on in Week 4.

Davidson Warriors at Daphne Trojans, Friday, Sept. 9, 7 p.m.

The Daphne Trojans lead the all-time series 11-7 and are currently on a three-game win streak where they've outscored the Davidson Warriors 99-21.

According to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society, the series started in 1994 and also includes two postseason meetings. Daphne took down Davidson in its 2010 run to the state title and won a third-round playoff game in 2005.

Friday night's kickoff will be the first of two straight home games for Trojan fans heading to Jubilee Stadium.

Escambia County Blue Devils at St. Michael Catholic Cardinals, Friday, Sept. 9, 7 p.m.

St. Michael's 44-12 win in last year's meeting evened the series between the schools and put the Cardinals' point total to 53 against Escambia County's 25 in the two contests.

All three games will factor into the playoff picture for Class 4A Region 1.

The Cardinals will play their third home game in the first four weeks of the season but now won't return home until the end of the month for their homecoming meeting against the Orange Beach Makos Thursday, Sept. 29.

LeFlore Rattlers at Elberta Warriors, THURSDAY, Sept. 8, 7 p.m.

Elberta’s Week 4 home game was one of the many moved from this Friday to Thursday, Sept. 8, ahead of impending storms.

Similar to St. Michael, the Warriors won last year's game against LeFlore to even the series at one win apiece. Elberta won 31-12 last year but fell by a 48-41 score in 2020.

Thursday’s game will serve as the Warriors’ first since the season-opening game against Bayside Academy. Elberta also won't be back on their home field until Sept. 30 when the UMS-Wright Prep Bulldogs come to town.

Other extra Thursday games

Baldwin County Tigers at Theodore Bobcats, Thursday, Sept. 8, 7 p.m.

Baldwin County and Theodore played off and on through the 1960s and 1990s but have not played since a string of six meetings from 2008-2013 in which the Bobcats won all six. This year’s contest, however, will be the first time the teams meet as regional opponents.

The Tigers trail the all-time series 13-7-1 and will return home next week after two straight away games. Theodore will be playing in its second straight Thursday night game.

Clarke Prep Gators at Snook Christian Eagles, Thursday, Sept. 8, 7 p.m., moved to Summerdale Middle

Snook plays its home games at Elberta High School and with the Warriors now moving their home game to Thursday at the same time, the Eagles announced their Week 4 game will now be played at Summerdale Middle School.

In what will be the teams' first meeting, Snook Christian Academy will host the last of three straight home games to open the season. After the Eagles opened regional play last week, their next three opponents are all non-region foes.

Fairhope Pirates at MGM Vikings, THURSDAY, Sept. 8, 7 p.m.

Another game moved to Thursday ahead of impending Friday storms.

All-time series: Fairhope leads 38-13-1, including a five-win streak where it has outscored MGM 199-47

Region series: Pirates lead 9-1, will be 11th overall meeting and ninth straight

Next week: Fairhope travels to face Davidson

Friday away games

Bayside Academy Admirals at Wilcox Central Jaguars, Friday, Sept. 9, 7 p.m.

All-time series: 0-0, teams' first meeting

Next week: Bayside Academy will host Jackson

Foley Lions at Baker Hornets, Friday, Sept. 9, 7 p.m.

All-time series: Foley leads 17-8 but have dropped last four meetings

Other meetings: First round of the 2012 playoffs, Lions won 30-28

Next week: Foley will be open

Gulf Shores Dolphins at UMS-Wright Prep Bulldogs, Friday, Sept. 9, 7 p.m.

All-time series: UMS-Wright Prep leads 6-0, all in region play

Next week: Gulf Shores will host LeFlore

Orange Beach Makos at Satsuma Gators, Friday, Sept. 9, 7 p.m.

All-time series: 0-0, teams' first meeting

Next week: Orange Beach hosts T.R. Miller

Robertsdale Golden Bears at McGill-Toolen Yellowjackets, Friday, Sept. 9, 7 p.m.

All-time series: McGill-Toolen leads 9-1 with nine straight wins

Next week: Robertsdale hosts Saraland

Spanish Fort Toros at Saraland Spartans, Friday, Sept. 9, 7 p.m.

All-time series: Spanish Fort leads 8-3

Trend: Teams are even in last four meetings

Other meetings: Thrice met in the state semifinals; Toros won in 2013 and 2020, Saraland won in 2014

Next week: Spanish Fort hosts Theodore
