Theatre 98 will close the third play of its current season, “Picnic,” by William Inge and directed by Jonne Thornton, on Sunday, June 24.
The winner of the 1953 Pulitzer Prize, this warm-hearted look at middle America introduces us to Madge (played by Camille Campbell) and Millie (played by Erin Sullivan), teenage sisters who couldn’t be more different.
Madge, the town beauty, has taken an interest in the mysterious boarder next door, a compellingly attractive young man called Hal (played by Mike Green, a talented theater veteran) who’s come to town looking to Alan (played by Clayton Duffy), his former college roommate, for employment.
Alan happens to also be Madge’s boyfriend.
This warm and powerful play is a nostalgic look at relationships and simpler times.
Others included in the refreshing blend of cast members are Cindy Manderson, Colin Isaacson, Emily Hayes, Christian Miller, Kyle Ann Simms, and returning to the stage are Angie Lopresti and Marcus Willis.
Theatre 98’s production of “Picnic” features the original, never officially documented music, as a result of the cooperation and special research by NYPL Music Division and the NYC Public Library, and from notes in the original 1953 production promptbook in the Billy Rose Theatre Collection.
