BAY MINETTE, Ala. – Live Oak Landing will roar to life, literally, as drag boats fill the Tensaw River this weekend.
The Outboard Drag Boat Association is hosting Duel on the Delta. The two-day event will bring racers in a total of seven classifications to Stockton. The drag boats, some of which reach speeds of more than 100 mph over a quarter-mile course, are scheduled to race right in front of Live Oak Landing.
The race teams will arrive Friday evening and begin setting up. The gates will open at 8 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Races start at 10 a.m. and will continue throughout each day until around 6 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-12. Children under 6 will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
The boats all feature outboard motors and are broken down into seven classes, based on hull design and engine modifications. The first five classes race over a quarter-mile course with boats in the Pro Gas class approaching 120 mph. Boats in the top two classes are too powerful to race a full quarter-mile without reaching unsafe speeds. They use a shorter, 800-foot course but Unlimited boats can still top 125 mph.
The classifications, based on top speeds are:
* V-6 Pro — Production race hulls utilizing outboard modifications with laser injection with top speeds in the 96-102 mph range.
* Lake Racer — Lake boats and bass boats with modified and high performance motors with top speeds of 103-108 mph
* Super Stock —Race hulls utilizing stock production Mercury outboards and capable of speeds 105-110 mph
* Modified Production — Race hulls with modified motors utilizing OEM parts with speeds in the 108-114 mph range.
* Pro Gas — Race hulls utilizing modified motors with aftermarket parts allowed. Boats obtain speeds of 112-120 mph over the quarter-mile course.
* Outlaw — Race hulls using modified motors with aftermarket parts and nitrous oxide allowed. Can reach speeds of 110-115 mph in just 800 feet.
* Unlimited — Anything goes. Nitrous allowed. Boats are capable of 115-125 mph in 800 feet.
