The fourth head football coach in South Alabama history, Major Applewhite, is set to be in Fairhope on Thursday, July 11, for the next installment of the USA by the Bay Eastern Shore Speaker Series.
The free event is set to kick off at 5:30 p.m. at South Alabama’s Baldwin County campus in Fairhope. Seating is limited, RSVP at southalabama.edu/speakerseries.
Jaguar fans have the chance to hear Applewhite’s vision for the program after he was promoted to head coach from offensive coordinator following the departure of Kane Wommack to Kalen DeBoer’s first staff at Alabama. Applewhite was South Alabama’s offensive coordinator since 2021 after a stint with the Crimson Tide as an analyst in 2019 and 2020. He also served as Alabama’s offensive coordinator in 2007.
With six student-athletes who played their high school ball in Baldwin County, the Jaguars are just one college team that has recruited multiple local players. Baldwin County alumni featured on South Alabama’s 2024 roster include redshirt freshman wide receiver Stacey Boykins Jr. from Daphne, redshirt sophomore linebacker Blayne Myrick from Fairhope, redshirt junior offensive lineman Jayson Jarrell from Fairhope, senior defensive lineman Carlos Johnson Jr. from Spanish Fort, redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Eli Webb from Fairhope and freshman offensive lineman Logan Joellenbeck from Foley.
Applewhite played his high school football in his hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he threw for 50 touchdowns and ran for 8 scores as a two-year starter for the Catholic Bears with a 25-2 record. He then quarterbacked the Texas Longhorns to four straight bowl games and was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year in 1998 and the conference’s co-offensive player of the year in 1999.
Other previous coaching stops include quarterbacks coach at Syracuse (2005) and Rice (2006), assistant head coach and running backs coach at Texas (2008-10) before being the Longhorns’ co-offensive coordinator (2011-2013). His only previous head coaching post came with the Houston Cougars from 2016-18 with a 15-11 record with trips to three bowl games.
