Seasonal plant swap brightens Foley gateways before holidays

Posted

Foley crews were out this week swapping decorative plants along major roads as the city prepared for the holiday season.

The Foley Horticulture Department, working with Landscape Workshop, replaces plants several times a year to keep key corridors refreshed with species suited to each season.

The November cycle focused on winter plants that could withstand cooler temperatures and provide color through the city’s busiest period. Crews worked to finish installations before Christmas in the Park and the Foley Christmas Parade, both set for the first weekend in December. City officials said the updated displays help frame a yearly surge in seasonal visitors and supported Foley’s tourism economy, which typically climb through December.

Workers placed new plants at the Foley Welcome Center, Centennial Park, the city flagpole on Alabama 59, the Foley Art Center and Pedestrian Bridge, Chicago Street and multiple intersections along Alabama 59 and U.S. 98. Crews also added fresh plantings around city gateway signs.

At least 14 varieties of winter plants were used across the city. The Foley Revitalization and Beautification Advisory Board oversaw the seasonal program, which aimed to maintain a consistent appearance along major routes and public gathering spots while adjusting plant selections to shifting weather conditions each year.
