I Believe in Miracles Party with The Pygmies will be a rocking 1980s party benefiting the Miracle League of Coastal Alabama.

Bruce White’s dream of building a baseball field navigable by wheelchairs started over 20 years ago. After pitching the idea to organizations across Baldwin County, the Lions Club agreed to take on the task as a Legacy Project.

The project has been slowed down by hurdles over the years like the economic downturn, hurricanes, the oil spill and a worldwide pandemic but those dedicated to seeing this through have soldiered on.

In 2019, the city of Summerdale donated 40 acres of land off County Road 71, giving the park a home that is centrally located in the county. A groundbreaking ceremony was held Aug. 1, 2019. Years of fundraising and donor support paid for the all-inclusive playground to be built but the COVID-19 pandemic shut the project down. The only item left was the installation of the ground surfacing. Then Hurricane Sally came to town in September 2020 and damaged some of the new playground equipment and scattered construction equipment.

The playground was completed in 2023 and features equipment that can be used to help special needs children swing and play.

Now it is time to focus on fundraising and completing the project so all children in our area can play ball. The Believe in Miracles event has become a highly anticipated fundraiser and a load of fun. The Velcro Pygmies will entertain while guests enjoy a buffet of heavy hors d’oeuvres, 360 photo booth, raffles and more.

The I Believe in Miracles Party with The Pygmies is Saturday, June 29, 7-11 p.m. at the Baldwin County Coliseum, 19477 Fairground Rd., Robertsdale. Tickets are on sale now. Visit the I Believe in Miracles – Party with The Pygmies Facebook event page for more information or to purchase tickets.
