Registration is underway for Alabama’s annual youth dove hunts, giving young hunters a chance to take part in one of the state’s most popular fall traditions.
The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division will host the hunts beginning Sept. 6. Designed with a simple setup and family-friendly atmosphere, the events aim to introduce young people to hunting and the outdoors in a safe and welcoming environment according to a news release.
“For many future hunters their first experience afield was during one of Alabama’s youth dove hunts,” said ADCNR Commissioner Chris Blankenship in the release. “From fostering community to connecting them with the outdoors, these hunts are a great way to introduce kids to the many outdoor recreation opportunities the state has to offer. We encourage anyone with children who are interested in hunting to experience one of our youth dove hunts this season.”
The hunts are free, but advance online registration is required at www.outdooralabama.com/youth-hunting/youth-dove-hunts.
Events are held in open fields across the state and staffed by Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries personnel. Each hunt begins with a short welcome session and safety reminders. Young hunters are encouraged to bring eye and ear protection, water and snacks.
Youth hunters must be age 15 or younger and accompanied by an adult at least 21 years old, or by a parent. The accompanying adult must hold a valid Alabama hunting license along with a Harvest Information Program registration and a Conservation ID number.
