Foley’s Leon Fluker took home one of two top honors at the 25th annual Bryant-Jordan Student Athlete Awards Banquet last week.

Fluker was named the state’s overall Achievement Award winner. A standout lineman at Foley High School, Fluker’s family endured hardship after he, his mother and four siblings had to move from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the city. After relocating to Mobile to live in a FEMA trailer, the family was forced to move again after the trailer burned. Fluker ended up at Foley, where he excelled in the classroom with a 3.78 GPA and on the football field as an offensive lineman for the Lions.

Gulf Shores senior athlete Ally Dicks was named a regional winner in the Bryant-Jordan Scholarship program’s Achievement category.

Dicks, who plays basketball and softball for the Dolphins, has a 4.22 GPA, is ranked fourth in her class and is the GSHS National Honor Society Vice President. After her father took a job in Texas and her sister went off to college, Dicks was left with a choice to make. She decided to stay in Gulf Shores to finish out her senior year. Dicks has lived with a classmate’s family this year and works a part time job to help cover her expenses.

Former Robertsdale multi-sport athlete Anna Shartzer was named the University of West Alabama’s softball player of the week recently. Shartzer, a freshman, is UWA’s batting leader with a .367 average and a team-high 62 hits and 82 total bases. She has 11 doubles, three home runs and 19 RBIs. Shartzer has a .485 slugging percentage and a .412 on base percentage.
