There is a new No. 1 soccer team in the Alabama High School Athletic Association coaches’ poll for Class 4A girls’ teams.
After it was previously held by the St. Michael Cardinals, the Orange Beach Makos overtook their area rivals for the top spot in this week’s rankings thanks to a 3-1 win last Tuesday. The Makos (11-2) were previously ranked No. 9 and the Cardinals (8-3) dropped only one spot in this week’s ranking and checked in at No. 2.
Another new item this week featured the Spanish Fort Toros cracking the girls’ super poll for all teams, regardless of classification. After a pair of wins last week, Spanish Fort (10-0-1) debuted at No. 10 in the super poll and climbed three spots in the Class 6A rankings to No. 5.
Other big movers included a pair of Class 4A teams on the boys’ circuit where Bayside Academy (5-1-3) jumped three spots to No. 7 and St. Michael (6-5) debuted at No. 10.
Boys’ teams from Gulf Shores (12-5 for No. 5 in Class 5A), Daphne (8-2-2 for No. 6 in Class 7A) and Spanish Fort (12-3 for No. 6 in Class 6A) were other teams around the middle of their classification’s rankings.
