LOXLEY — Culinary students at Baldwin Preparatory Academy are now serving their dishes to all as Blaze Bistro is now open to the public.
Blaze Bistro serves as a hands-on classroom setting for students to practice working in a restaurant, from front of house to kitchen.
On a typical school day high school juniors work the bistro and serve students during a brunch period from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. For the grand opening to the public, sophomores and seniors signed up to help with preparations and operations as the restaurant held extended hours for the day.
"I am so excited for today," Veronica Monsegur, culinary arts teacher at Baldwin Prep, said. "Our students are super ready."
On Oct. 20, the morning of the grand opening to the public, a nationwide Amazon outage affected many platforms from Snapchat to Canvas. The Toast system students used to take orders at Blaze Bistro was also impacted.
Operations were able to continue though, but online orders were unavailable for the day.
Monsegur said the situation helped teach the students how to "roll with the punches" in a restaurant setting as technical issues could happen at any time.
Typically, curbside-pickup orders can be placed by visiting www.toasttab.com/local/order/the-blaze-bistro or by scanning the QR code attached to the bistro flyer.
Meals are fresh and student-crafted daily. Lunch options include chicken wings, nachos, BBQ chicken paninis and cheese, pepperoni or meat lovers' pizzas. The Blaze Bistro also serves a variety of coffee and other drinks alongside cookies, cinnamon rolls and muffins. Prices range from $1 to $11.
