NOAA Fisheries announced that some Southeast Region fishing permits will remain valid past their stated expiration dates as the agency continues to navigate delays caused by the ongoing government shutdown.
The Southeast Region Permits Office in St. Petersburg has been unable to process permit renewals since the shutdown began, leaving many commercial and recreational operators in limbo. The agency said the move ensures that those who submitted complete renewal applications on time can continue their operations without disruption.
Under 5 U.S.C. § 558, permits with complete renewal applications submitted before their expiration date will be considered valid until NOAA Fisheries makes a final determination once the office reopens.
The temporary extension applies to all Gulf of Mexico, South Atlantic and Highly Migratory Species vessel and dealer permits. However, it does not cover vessel permit transfers or requests for new permits.
NOAA officials emphasized that individuals who applied to renew their permits before the shutdown but have not received new documents will be allowed to operate under the existing permits until further notice.
The Southeast Region Permits Office will resume normal processing when government operations are restored.
