Newton’s phys-ed program recognized

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — During a Thursday assembly at J. Larry Newton School in Fairhope, sixth-grader Jordan Hall sang “Elbow Room” from “School House Rock, Live!” while second-grade students danced a choreographed routine.

“This (performance) demonstrated how Newton’s physical education program partners with the performing arts through rhythmic activities,” said Newton School Principal Suellen Brazil, noting that kind of education program was featured in a school-wide musical presentation last spring. “We take great pride in providing a comprehensive educational program for our students that includes an exemplary academic program combined with a comprehensive emphasis on physical fitness.”

The school’s physical education program was honored this year when it received “demonstration center” status from the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. The Alabama Department of Education selected Newton School for its outstanding elementary school program of physical education, which emphasizes physical fitness, according to the selection criteria.

“Our physical education program engages all students in physical activities for 45 minutes daily that are designed to increase their heart rate and provide a strong foundation for healthy lifestyles,” Brazil said. “ We are delighted (with this recognition) and are proud of the exceptional program provided by Emily Pharez.”

The Dec. 10 assembly highlighted the school’s physical education program and included an overview of the various types of activities that engage students in fitness and cardiovascular activities that are fun, Brazil said. The event was attended by a number of local and state educational professionals and public officials.

“The efforts shown at J. Larry Newton not only instill habits and a lifestyle that put students on track to living better but also serve as an example to the surrounding community,” State Rep. Joe Faust said Thursday. “For our youth, strong bodies and strong minds are the cornerstones to healthy, productive lives. Newton School will receive this much-deserved award, but the ultimate benefit of (the school’s) actions will be realized in the lives of students every day.”
