National Tire Safety Week promotes safe driving practices

Posted

From June 24 to July 3, National Tire Safety Week urges drivers to focus on their safety by verifying their tires are in top shape before embarking on summer journeys. This nationwide initiative aims to highlight the crucial role tires play in vehicle safety.

In 2023, drivers in the U.S. collectively covered 3.263 trillion miles, underscoring the importance of well-maintained tires for safe driving, as highlighted by the Federal Highway Administration.
Here are five essential tips for tire safety recommended by experts:

  1. Check tire tread depth: Use a tread depth gauge or perform a simple test with a penny. Insert the penny into the tire's tread groove with Lincoln's head facing downward. If the top of Lincoln's head is visible, it's time to replace the tire.
  2. Check tire pressure: Regularly check tire pressure when the tires are cold, preferably in the morning before driving. Incorrect tire pressure can lead to poor handling, reduced fuel efficiency, and uneven tire wear. Remember, hot summer temperatures can affect tire pressure; for every 10-degree Fahrenheit change in temperature, tire pressure can fluctuate by about 1 psi.
  3. Rotate tires regularly: Rotate tires every 6,000 miles or according to your vehicle manufacturer's recommendation. Regular rotation helps promote even tire wear, extending the life of your tires.
  4. Replace old tires: Replace tires that are six years old or older, regardless of tread depth. Rubber becomes brittle and prone to failure as it ages, compromising tire safety.
  5. Equip for emergencies: Check your vehicle's trunk for tire emergency supplies, including a spare tire, tire iron, and a tire inflation kit with sealants and air compressors.

These tips are crucial for maintaining tire safety year-round but are especially pertinent during National Tire Safety Week. The initiative encourages drivers to take proactive steps to ensure their vehicles are equipped with safe and reliable tires before embarking on summer road trips.
