MOBILE, Ala. — The third annual McDonald’s Port City Power & Fitness Challenge is set for Saturday at UMS-Wright School in Mobile.
Along with the annual push-pull bench press and deadlift competition at 10 a.m., a "Fitness Challenge" will be at noon, featuring non-traditional exercises that use a combination of endurance, strength and power exercises.
"The Fitness Challenge is more endurance oriented," event organizer Jason Greene, who owns Jason's Fitness in Foley and Mobile, said. "I started it as a way to motivate law enforcement officers and fire officers. It is similar to what they do in their training with chin ups, push ups and tire flips."
Greene said the Fitness Challenge is popular partly because you can train for it anywhere.
"It has really caught on with people who may not have access to a gym or who don't like going to the gym."
Greene said competitors for the event usually come from Mobile and Baldwin Counties, and the Pascagoula and Pensacola areas.
Interested competitors can register for the event at JasonsFitness.com. The competition is for teenagers to masters.
