State Representative Matt Simpson has officially launched his campaign for re-election to the Alabama House of Representatives, aiming to continue representing House District 96, according to a news release.
Simpson recently kicked off his campaign with an event at Moe’s Original BBQ in Daphne that drew more than 200 supporters, per the release. Attending the event were Daphne Mayor Robin LeJeune and Spanish Fort Mayor Brad Bass, reflecting strong local backing for Simpson’s bid to remain in office.
“Representing District 96 has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Simpson said in the release. “I’ve worked hard to make sure our community and our families are protected, our economy continues to grow, and that we’re building a stronger future for Baldwin County. There’s still important work to be done, and I’m ready to keep fighting for the people I serve.”
Before joining the Legislature, Simpson built a legal career as a prosecutor in Baldwin and Mobile counties, earning a reputation for steady judgment and a firm commitment to protecting children.
In the Alabama House, Simpson has focused on public safety and family protection. He carried legislation to increase penalties for fentanyl trafficking, giving law enforcement stronger tools to combat a drug that has devastated communities across the state. He also sponsored a bill making certain child sex crimes eligible for the death penalty, ensuring the harshest punishments are available for the most violent offenders.
Simpson helped establish Baldwin County’s Mental Health Court, designed to provide early treatment for people in crisis, easing strain on families and the justice system. He also advocated for additional judges and the expansion of satellite courthouses to reduce court backlogs and improve access to justice.
On economic development, Simpson helped secure stable funding for Baldwin County’s Economic Development Alliance, which contributed to the recruitment of Novelis to the South Alabama Mega Site, one of the largest industrial investments in state history. He also supported Baldwin Prep Academy, a new trade and vocational high school aimed at preparing students for local workforce needs.
Simpson backed the CHOOSE Act to expand educational options for families, supported cutting the grocery tax — the largest tax cut in state history — and worked to reduce state debt to strengthen Alabama’s long-term financial health.
“This job is about taking care of people and making sure families have what they need to build better lives,” Simpson said. “Whether it’s expanding Mental Health Court, holding fentanyl traffickers accountable, strengthening penalties for child predators, securing Novelis and Baldwin Prep, supporting school choice, cutting the grocery tax, or paying down state debt, these are practical steps that make a real difference. We’re getting important work done, and I want to keep building on that progress.”
Simpson has long been active in Republican politics, previously serving as Chair of the Baldwin County Republican Party and Chair for Congressional District 1 on the Alabama Republican Party Executive Committee. In the Legislature, he serves as Chair of the Ethics and Finance Committee and the Baldwin County Legislation Committee. He is also a member of the Judiciary Committee, Ports, Waterways and Intermodal Transit Committee, Constitution, Campaign and Elections Committee, Sunset Committee, and the Joint Prison Oversight Committee, according to the release.
Simpson is an elder at Coastal Church in Daphne. He and his wife, Marina, have been married for 22 years and have two children.
