MAGNOLIA SPRINGS - The Magnolia Springs Town Council approved a donation of $650 to the Miracle League of Coastal Alabama during its Nov. 23 meeting. The council was approached about the donation during a previous meeting. The donation amount was recommended by the town’s Finance Committee.
The donation will go towards the completion of a special needs park and ballfield that is being constructed in Summerdale. Plans to construct a Miracle League field began back in 2004, but were delayed by Hurricane Ivan, the Gulf Coast oil spill, and most recently, COVID-19 and Hurricane Sally.
Recently, the City of Orange Beach committed $20,000 toward the project, and said it would match donations received from other municipalities up to $100,000. Other municipalities that have committed donations to the project are Summerdale, Elberta, Foley, Gulf Shores and Robertsdale. The Miracle League has also made presentations at the Loxley and Silverhill Town Councils.
Also on Nov. 23, the Magnolia Springs Town Council:
•Passed a proclamation declaring Sunday, Dec. 5 Fannie Flagg Day in the Town of Magnolia Springs. The town will host A Redbird Christmas with luminaries lit on select town streets on Saturday, Dec. 4 and Sunday, Dec. 5 from 5 - 8 p.m. Also on Dec. 5, the Magnolia Springs Community Association will host Cookies with Santa and the lighting of the town’s Christmas tree. Flagg has donated several signed copies of her book, “A Redbird Christmas” for the community association to sell, and has agreed to allow the town to use the title “A Redbird Christmas” for its holiday celebration.
•Passed a resolution declaring Feb. 25 - 27 Severe Weather Preparedness Tax Holiday.
•Passed a resolution to amend the Fiscal Year 2021/2022 budget.
•Passed a resolution to donate $850 to the Magnolia Springs Community Association to assist toward the Red Bird Christmas celebration.
•Discussed the installation of a culvert on Island Avenue from the northside, as well as constructing a swell to help with water flow. The council is working with a property owner in the area who has agreed to the town putting a ditch in. The council is working with the town attorney to create an agreement between the property owner and the town.
•Discussed the Magnolia Springs Arboretum. A new sprinkler system has recently been installed and council member Steve Mobley discussed future repairs to the fence. Once pavers are installed in the near future, Mobley said the arboretum will be complete and ready to reopen. The arboretum has been closed since it was devastated by Hurricane Sally in 2020.
