Lions Club International Foundation highlights benefits of new Emergency Response trailer

Lions Club prepared to help during disaster situations

FOLEY - The Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) recently revealed a new Emergency Response trailer that can be used during disaster situations. The trailer will be stocked with nonperishable items including mops, brooms, a generator, a leaf-blower, an awning, tarps, heavy-duty plastic, diapers and underwear.
Multiple districts within Alabama, including District 34C, which includes Baldwin County, purchased these trailers after devastating events including Hurricane Sally and tornados in northern Alabama.
“Hurricane Sally is what really started this, and we said we need to be able to respond to these emergencies,” said Lion District Governor Charlie Wigglesworth. “Before the trailer, we would just show up as individuals to help with the situation.”
Wigglesworth said that when Hurricane Sally hit, the district governor at the time was able to call LCIF and request a $10,000 grant to help with the emergency efforts. Foley received approximately $1,300 of the funds, while Gulf Shores received $2,000. The Foley Lion’s Club used the funds to purchase hot meals from Wolf Bay Restaurant and give them out for free to community members. While they were able to purchase food, members said cleaning supplies and items included within the emergency response trailer were scarce.
The trailer, including the cost of adding supplies and getting it wrapped, was approximately $12,000. The largest portion was paid by the LCIF, with individual Lions Clubs donating additional funds.
