Time is running out for those looking to nominate a deserving veteran for Fairhope's 2024 Veteran of the Year award.

The City of Fairhope is accepting applications through this Friday, Oct. 18. All submissions must be turned in or postmarked by the deadline.

The annual award honors a local living veteran who has not only served the nation but also made significant contributions to the community through volunteerism and leadership. The 2024 recipient will be announced at the final City Council meeting in October. According to the city, past honorees include community members such as Edwin Lessard Jr., Larry Bridges and Dr. Barry Booth.

Eligible nominees must be residents of Fairhope or work in the city and belong to a sanctioned veteran organization such as American Legion Post 199 or VFW Post 5660. Nominees must be veterans of one of the five U.S. armed forces branches, including the Reserves, National Guard or U.S. Merchant Marine, and demonstrate outstanding patriotism and selfless service. Previous recipients of the award are not eligible.

Nominations can recognize veterans for either a single act of service or ongoing contributions to the community. The recipient will join a distinguished list of local leaders who have made a lasting impact on Fairhope.

Applications are available at city buildings, American Legion Post 199 and VFW Post 5660. Nominations can be delivered to the mayor's office at Fairhope City Hall or mailed to the Veteran of the Year Committee, P.O. Drawer 429, Fairhope, AL 36533. Nominations are valid for two years.

The application can be found on the city's website at www.fairhopeal.gov/Home/Components/News/News/7764/. For questions or more information, contact the city at (251) 929-1466.
