After more than seven years of helping keep Bay Minette safe, K9 Harko has officially retired.
The Belgian Malinois, who joined the department in 2018, will spend his retirement with his handler, Sgt. Justin Kelly.
During his career, Harko was credited with hundreds of drug arrests, locating felons and seizing significant amounts of suspected drug money.
Police Chief Al Tolbert praised his work.
"Harko is directly responsible for hundreds of drug arrests, locating felons, and the seizure of large amounts of suspected drug money," Tolbert said. "Job well done K9 Harko. Enjoy your well-earned retirement."
Mayor Bob Wills highlighted Harko's impact beyond law enforcement. The dog served as a grand marshal in the city's Christmas parade and frequently visited schools, daycares, nursing homes and other community facilities.
"Harko was a tremendous addition not only to our Police Department but also to the City in general. He was a great working dog in helping to make drug arrests, tracking suspects and protecting officers," Wills said. "He was a great ambassador for the City and visited schools, daycares, nursing homes and various other facilities. He has earned his retirement but will be greatly missed."
Harko is not the only K9 on the force. Jax, a black Labrador who joined in 2019, remains on active duty.
