A new era has arrived in Bay Minette with Joshua Brown now taking the reins as the city's mayor.
Brown, 32, officially became the city's mayor during a packed meeting held at Bay Minette City Hall on Monday, Nov. 3. After being sworn in, Brown said he is ready to address the community's concerns.
"The No. 1 thing is making sure we are unified as a complete city because we all have the same goal. We want to see Bay Minette grow and prosper," Brown said. "So, I really want to get this comprehensive drainage analysis in place. I also want to take care of the city employees, make sure they have the proper resources and tools to effectively serve our citizens in Bay Minette."
It was also a historic moment for the City of Bay Minette. The election and swearing in of Brown makes him the first Black mayor in Bay Minette's 188-year history. The lifelong Bay Minette resident won 54% of the vote in August, unseating longtime mayor Bob Wills in his bid for a fifth term.
"It is a very high honor," Brown said. "It is also a burden and a good burden, so I need to make sure that every step I take is guided by the Lord, but it is what's for best for the City of Bay Minette."
Monday night's swearing in ceremony also included returning council members Pete Sellers (District 1), Mike Phillips (District 2) and Matt Franklin (District 3) and newcomer Tyrone Thompson (District 4). Chris Norman Sr. was also sworn in as the District 5 representative, having served on council in the past.
"For everyone at home," Brown said, "I hope to see them along these next four years because I'm going to be out, going to be looking to shake hands and hear the concerns, and hopefully we can all come together, work together and build this big, beautiful Bay Minette."
