Help with telephone bills available

Several months ago, I became aware of the Lifeline LinkUp program, which assists qualified consumers with assistance on their telephone bills for basic telephone service each month.

At that time, the only individuals in Alabama who could qualify were those on Medicaid. Since then, I have been pleased to be able to assist in changing eligibility requirements so that now many other means of verification have been added. The categories now include food stamps, public housing, HUD Section 8 programs, SSI, TANF, or LIHEAP. Anyone currently receiving services from one of these programs should qualify for the Lifeline LinkUp funds.

Any citizen, who is currently receiving assistance from one of the programs I mentioned, should contact their telephone company to obtain an application to apply for the Lifeline LinkUp program. If you qualify, the program can pay up to one-half the original installation of a telephone and one-half of your basic telephone service each month. These funds are federal funds, which are now going unused by the citizens of Alabama.

Anyone who needs further information or assistance in contacting their company may also call my office (334) 242-5191.
