Ethan turned 2 last week. The past two years with my smallest Boy Wonder have really flown by.
With each day older, he does something that amazes me even more, or at least makes me laugh a lot and sometimes cry. Since the day Ethan arrived, Lee and I have said there is something special about him — something different. Maybe we are the only ones that see it, but I don’t think so.
As I write this, I’m watching him push a truck through the kitchen as fast as his little legs will carry him. His smile is as big as the sun and it warms my heart to see him grin. Typical toddler behavior, but still, there is something different about the grin and the way his eyes sparkle. I wish I could explain it.
He just sat next to me in a dining room chair. In between shrieks and shrills about Sponge Bob, he put his little hand on my chin and turned my head towards his. “Mommy, wus you,” he said in his tiny mite voice. Again, still typical toddler behavior, but I promise there is something different.
I don’t know why God decided to give him to us, but he did. It wasn’t easy getting him here. After a pregnancy of bed rest and heart failure following labor, I guess God knew I needed him.
From the first moments, we knew he was special. I will never forget Lee coming back from the nursery to say “Did you know he has three thumbs?” Yes. That’s what he said. The nurses argued with him, laughing, saying “He’s just picking with you.” He wasn’t. I’m sure you will agree this isn’t something you would ‘pick’ about just minutes after having a child. I guess that was the first indication he would be different.
Ethan will go on to do something great. I just have that feeling. You just watch and see.
