Haines to sign latest Southern thriller in Fairhope

Carolyn Haines will read and sign her latest novel, Fever Moon, April 26, from 6-8 p.m. at Page & Palette, 32 S. Section St. in Fairhope.

Members of the Deep South Writers Salon (DSWS) will join her to discuss the benefits and problems of critique groups.

With the acclaimed novel Penumbra, Haines branched out from the cozy Southern mysteries that made her name and moved into more ominous literary territory.

She continues that exploration of the darker side of the South with Fever Moon.

Set in New Iberia Parish, La. at the close of World War II, Deputy Raymond Thibodeaux battles his own wartime demons as he tries to find the person responsible for the gruesome killing of wealthy landowner Henri Bastion.

Fragile Adele Hebert confesses to the crime, but because she believes herself possessed, Thibodeaux assumes she’s not the culprit.

Superstitions lie as thick and menacing as the morning fog over the bayou, and word quickly spreads that a werewolf has overtaken Adele’s body.

In this dark and swirling literary thriller, Haines tells the story of a town that is caught up in the frenzy of a murder and a killer who feeds its terror to suit his own purposes.

Publisher Weekly states that “Haines’ greatest strength is her powerful sense of place: here the miasmic swamp is as alive and as threatening as any villain.”

According to Kirkus Review, “Southern specialist Haines presents a case that’s as macabre psychically as it is geographically, with enough emotional turmoil for a whole series.”

Haines has been a member of the Deep South Writers Salon for 16 years.

At the signing, the members will share humorous stories about each other while going over the basic guidelines for building a critique group. The group will offer valuable information for booklovers and writers in general.

Haines is the author of several novels including, Penumbra, Summer of the Redeemers, Touched and the Bones series.

She was born and raised in Lucedale, Miss., and currently lives on a farm near Mobile.
