Students and faculty at Gulf Shores City Schools (GSCS) are not just making waves — they are working to spread sunshine.
GSCS is stepping up to support those impacted by recent hurricanes by hosting an emergency hurricane blood drive on October 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The initiative aims to replenish blood supplies that have been significantly depleted in local hospitals due to the storms, offering an opportunity for the community to come together during a challenging time.
This initiative has special significance for many students, including Portia Hollis, a junior at Gulf Shores High School, who has partnered with Gulf Shores City Schools to organize the blood drive. Hollis shared her motivation behind the event, highlighting the generosity the community received during the aftermath of Hurricane Sally.
"So many helped us when we were in the path of destruction with Hurricane Sally and this is a small way we can contribute immediately," Hollis said.
The blood drive will take place at Gulf Shores High School, located at 600 East 15th Ave. Community members can find the Bloodmobile on site, ready to welcome donors eager to help. The drive is open to a broad audience, including teachers, staff, family members and friends. The event not only serves a practical purpose but also fosters a sense of unity among community members. Head to Gulf Shores High School this Friday to roll up your sleeves and contribute to a cause that can truly save lives.
Participants will learn about the importance of donating blood, as each donation has the potential to save up to three lives. This is especially crucial in hurricane-affected areas, where hospitals are struggling to maintain adequate blood supplies following the storms. Donors will also be helping to address the urgent needs of local healthcare facilities, which are working diligently to care for those injured or affected by the storms. Donating blood typically takes just a short amount of time, making it an accessible way for individuals to make a meaningful impact on their community.
To participate, donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and present a photo ID. It is important to note that 16-year-olds will need written parental permission to donate. In appreciation for their generosity, all donors will receive a free T-shirt and a complimentary cholesterol screening.
