Gov. Kay Ivey declares October Farm to School Month in Alabama

Gov. Kay Ivey has proclaimed October as Farm to School Month in Alabama, highlighting the partnership between local farmers, schools and students.

Since 2020, the Alabama Farm to School Program has received $1.595 million from the state legislature for its incentive program according to a news release. Schools have used the funding to spend $3,724,315 on Alabama-grown products and have served 8,504,382 meals featuring locally sourced foods.

“We are proud to see Alabama students enjoying fresh, locally grown foods, while also supporting Alabama farmers,” said Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries Commissioner Rick Pate in the release. “Farm to School Month highlights the importance of connecting the next generation with where their food comes from, and it’s a chance to recognize the dedication of both our farmers and school staff who make this possible.”

The monthlong celebration gives schools a chance to recognize farmers, school staff and students who benefit from the program. Schools across the state will host special events, classroom activities and hands-on learning experiences that connect students directly with agriculture.

“I’m proud of the Alabama Farm to School program and all it has accomplished,” said Farmers Market Authority Interim Director Beth Spratt. “We want to sincerely thank Governor Ivey and the Alabama legislature for providing funds for us to incentivize Alabama schools making local purchases.”

The program, run by the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries, connects local farmers with schools to bring fresh Alabama products into cafeterias. It supports local farmers, strengthens regional economies and helps students learn where their food comes from. Farm to School also promotes school gardens, farm field trips and classroom activities that encourage healthy eating and agricultural awareness.
