Glenn Floyd Dawson, of Loxley, Alabama, was born May 24, 1949, and died Jul. 11, 2024. He was the son of Ralph and Virginia (Ikey) Dawson of Loxley, Alabama. He was the grandson of Floyd and Edna Marshall of Loxley, Alabama, and James and Lelia Dawson of Robertsdale, Alabama. Loving son, he was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Catherine, sister Notoma "Toni" Dawson, brother Allen Dawson (Margaret), an aunt, several cousins, three sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews. Glenn attended Loxley Elementary School and graduated from Robertsdale High School. He served as a sergeant in the United States Air Force from 1969 to 1974. Glenn had been trained since childhood by his father, a gunsmith, and became a munitions expert for the Air Force. When his tour of duty ended, he returned home and soon joined the Daphne Police Force. He was one of the three officers who built up and developed the department, helped it grow to support the population, brought in the computer age, consulted with lawyers and judges on new laws and regulations, and among other projects, was largely involved for the department in the design and construction of the current facility. During his years with the department, he was the only person certified by the State of Alabama to train FBI agents in firearms handling. This certification and his training sessions continued for two years after his retirement until the State could find a replacement. He received numerous awards and commendations while serving in the military and as a law enforcement officer. He retired from the Daphne Police Force as Assistant Chief. He loved farming and after his Air Force tour planned to farm the family land like his grandfather Marshall. While times had changed for small farmers, he was able to find crops he could produce for a couple of years and continued to maintain the land he loved. He was a loving family man, a kind person, well respected, even by those he had to arrest during his years as a police officer. He was able to help his father and spend time with him during his illness and remaining months. He acted as the protector for his mother and family. He was keen on details, had an amazing memory, and could find the funny side of some of his police encounters. He was greatly loved and will be missed by family and friends.
