A versatile area athlete became Faulkner State Community College men’s basketball coach Jack Robertson’s latest signee last week when Flomaton’s Scott Walton signed with the Sun Chiefs.
The 6-foot-3, 175-pound Walton, who lettered in three sports for the Escambia County school, led Flomaton to its best season aver as a senior when the Hurricanes won 19 games and advanced to the Class 2A Sub-Regional round. Walton averaged team highs of 21.7 points and 10 rebounds a game and is also an excellent outside shooter, having sank 44 percent of his 3-point field goal attempts as a senior. He also was a 73-percent free-throw shooter.
“Scott’s a very good athlete. He can shoot the ball, and he can also go inside and score as well,” Robertson said. “He probably needs to get a little stronger and heavier, but we’ll start to get that done as soon as he gets in school and we can get him in the weight room.
“He’s also a good student and a good person, which is what we strive to get here at Faulkner,” Robertson, the Alabama Community College Conference’s all-time winningest coach, said. “He’s been well-coached at Flomaton by coach Jerrod Green, now he’ll need to adjust to the quickness of the college game, which I think he’ll be able to do.”
Robertson also described Walton as an athlete who “can really jump, he’s tough, hard-nosed, a good shooter. (The opposition is) gonna really have to guard him. He carried Flomaton to the highest (win total) they’ve ever had. I think he’s the first Flomaton player we’ve ever had here at Faulkner.”
It was almost by accident that Robertson and the Sun Chiefs landed Walton, the coach said.
Paul Akins, an adjunct instructor in the FSCC physical education department, “lives up that way and saw him in the area tournament at Flomaton when he scored over 30 points, and told me about him. I went up and saw him the next night and in the Sub-Regional game and although he didn’t score as much, I was impressed with Scott’s skills.
“I think he’ll be able to help us as a freshman.”
Walton is Robertson’s fourth announced signee of the recruiting season. He follows 6-6 sophomore transfer Zach Abney of Tallahassee, Fla., 6-6 center Marcus Broughton of nearby Baldwin County High School and 6-2 guard Brandon Hubbard of Gulf Shores.
