Foley stabbing suspect identified as Mobile man

Foley police have successfully identified a suspect in the stabbing incident that occurred in Heritage Park on Wednesday, Jan. 17. The authorities are actively searching for Bernard Christopher Abney, a 40-year-old individual from Mobile according to a news release.

Abney is facing serious charges, including one felony count of second-degree assault, specifically assault with a deadly weapon and one felony count of first-degree attempted rape. Police are appealing to the public for assistance in locating Abney, who is believed to be homeless and frequently moves between acquaintances and homeless encampments. He is also known to frequent venues that offer assistance to the homeless. There is a possibility that Abney may have returned to the Mobile area.

According to the release, Abney is considered dangerous with a history of weapons and violence. The release described Abney as standing at 5 feet 6 inches and weighing approximately 210 lbs and he should should not be approached by the public. Authorities are urging individuals with information that may aid in locating and apprehending the suspect to come forward.

The victim of the attack was assaulted on the Wilbourne Antique Rose Trail in Foley, prompting a 911 call at 5:40 p.m. The caller reported that a woman had sought refuge in a business, revealing that she had been stabbed. Upon arriving at the scene, police discovered that the woman had sustained stab wounds to her arm, torso and thigh. The victim was taken to University Hospital for treatment of injuries that were described as non-life threatening.

At this time, the victim has been released and is currently recovering at home. Accoridng to police,  the victim's strength and tenacity, along with her resistance likely brought the attack to an end and potentially saved her life.

Police Chief Thurston Bullock acknowledged the heightened sense of fear within Foley citizens due to this case, describing it as an "all hands on deck" investigation. The collaborative efforts of police employees, detectives  as well as assistance and tips from the public have led to the identification of a suspect and the establishment of probable cause for arrest warrants in the case.
