FOLEY, Ala. — A small crowd gathered around the flag pole at Foley City Hall for a 9/11 remembrance service.
Abiding Love Christian Fellowship led that noon service, which included prayer, patriotic music and recognition of U.S. servicemen and veterans by Navy veteran Joe Godwin.
Foley Police Chief David Wilson opened the ceremony by recapping the terrorist attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, in which passenger airplanes were hijacked and flown into the twin towers of New York’s World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Passengers of a fourth plane overtook their captors and managed to drive the aircraft into the ground with only themselves and the hijackers perishing.
“Almost 3,000 men, women and children were killed in these cowardly attacks,” Wilson said, adding that 400 first responders died in rescue efforts. “Ten thousand people were rescued.”
Abiding Love Pastors Dr. C.J. and Gigi McBride also spoke.
