Fairhope's Pine Street is getting a makeover.
Residents and visitors familiar with the downtown area may know Pine Street. It's a narrow two-way street with parking on either side located across the street from the Fairhope Civic Center. It runs between North Section Street and North Bancroft Street.
The project, underway now, narrows the street to a 16-foot-wide one-way street and will get resurfaced. The biggest addition is parking, with 37 additional spaces included.
Fairhope City Councilman Jack Burrell joked during a June 10 council meeting that the additional parking will hopefully keep people from parking in Mayor Sherry Sullivan's parking space at the city building across the street.
During the meeting, council approved a change order for $31,295. The new contract total will be $282,693. The change order overs the addition of 1,030 square feet of pacer angle public parking.
The project includes the addition of an eight-foot-wide concrete sidewalk along the north side, three new tree wells with cast iron tree well grates, completion of the sidewalk system along the south side and street lighting.
A similar project converted De La Mare Avenue to a one-way street and added parking. Despite large "Do Not Enter" signs on the South Church Street end of De La Mare Avenue, cars can sometimes be seen turning onto the one-way street. Please pay attention to all signage in downtown Fairhope to ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians.
