FOLEY — The Lady Pirates walked away with a 9-0 sweep of the Lady Lions on Monday as Fairhope took advantage of Foley's youth.

When Wes Lathan took over as head coach at Foley, he had just six players on his roster. Lathan has doubled that number, but has no seniors and two middle school players that see action.

"We have everybody coming back next year," Lathen said of his 2-5 club. "Everyone is starting to get involved year round and they are taking lessons from pro's. We have had considerable improvement since the start of the season."

Fairhope's (9-3) Liz Cameron made her first start as a No. 1 seed and defeated Lady Lion Mary Ana Christopher. Cameron walked away with 8-3 victory and gained significant experience as a team leader.

"I definitely had to make adjustments to my game," Cameron said. "It's an adjustment to my swing when playing as the one seed. I had to adjust to her play."

On court two in singles play, Amanda Cornelison defeated Megan Havel 8-1, while Kristen Williams swept Emily Parnell 8-0 on court three.

"I went out there and played really hard," Williams said. "I have been playing really well lately and I went out and did what I had to do."

Williams, who has been bothered with blisters, was able to dominate her competition by overcoming the hand aggravation.

"I get blisters very easily on my hands," she said. "So I have to tape them up before each match. It usually affects my play, but it's been getting better lately."

On court four, Katie Daniels outmatched Faith Denton for a 8-0 sweep, while Julie Carter beat Brooke Underwood as the No. 5 seed for a 8-1 victory. Catherine Coker rounded up the singles sweep with an 8-0 win over Patti Taylor.

"Anytime you play Fairhope they are unbelievable," Latham said. "They play year round and they are really good. It's just fun for our girls to come out and see that level of competition because it makes them better."

In doubles play Foley's Christopher and Havel fell 8-1 to Katherine Bolton and Nikki Rowland on court one. Cornelison and Williams won the No. 2 seed match against Lady Lions Julie Hamilton and Julia Faisen.

In the third and final doubles match Fairhope's Malorie Sain and Katie Daniels defeated Amanda Moore and Courtney Wilson.

"It was a good win for us," said Lady Pirates head coach Andy Ryan. "We are trying to get ready for sectionals and I think it's a step in the right direction."

Ryan said some of his players have been dealing with illness and his main goal in preparing for sectionals is a healthy club.

For players like Williams, it's a chance for her Lady Pirates to shine.

"We have played so well this year and I am proud of my team," she said. "I know we are going to go sectionals and do well and then hopefully we can place top five in the state."
