GULF SHORES, Ala.—McGill-Toolen Catholic’s No. 1-ranked Class 6A Dirty Dozen claimed the 2013 Gulf Shores Shrimp Festival tournament title Saturday with a 2-0 sweep of No. 2-ranked 5A Hartselle 25-17, 25-16.

The Dirty Dozen (38-7) and the HHS Tigers were the only teams standing in the way of an All-Baldwin final as Mc-T knocked off the No. 1-ranked 3A Bayside Admirals for the first time this year and Hartselle stopped 6A Robertsdale in the semifinals of the gold division.

McGill-Toolen swept Bayside 25-19, 25-18 to advance to the final while Robertsdale forced a third and deciding game with the Tigers but came up short 25-15, 23-25, 15-8.

Dirty Dozen head coach Gretchen Boykin said getting by Bayside was an important boost for her club which did not lose a game in the two-day tournament.

“That’s the first time we beat them this year,” she said. “But it’s the first time we put a real complete game together. We got off to a good start in the first game and then kept up the pressure. Forced them to play from behind. In the second game they did the same, built a lead. But we were able to stay focused and take the lead and then keep that momentum going. And that’s a good thing to have going this time of year.”

For the tournament, McGill-Toolen was led by Victoria Young with 35 kills and nine blocks; Katelyn Bobinger added 27 kills, seven blocks and five aces; Libby Turnipseed had 18 kills; Katherine Still had 15 kills, three aces and 33 digs; Autumn Trimble had 14 kills; Abby Hutchins had 12 kills; Sharon Williams had 53 assists, 18 digs; Lindsey Farnell had 49 assists, 12 digs; Kendall Coleman had 51 digs and Mary Frances Seiter added 27 digs.

Hartselle’s leaders in the championship match were Megan Zuck with six kills, two blocks; Taylor Lybarger with four kills, seven digs; Melissa Paul Hill had 15 assists, four digs and an ace; Sarah Ellen Battles had 13 digs and Katy Beth Bole added two kills.

In the tournament Silver Division, Baker won the title 25-16, 25-19 over James Clemens of Madison, Ala. The Hornets improved to 32-14 overall. In the Bronze Division Daphne came back from a set down to defeat Saraland 22-25, 25-13, 15-12.

The Bayside-Dirty Dozen Battle of The No. 1’s series stands at 2-1 in the Admirals favor. The two clubs meet again Tuesday (Oct. 15) at the University of South Alabama Jag Gym at 6 p.m.
