Daphne’s Vic Moten is quickly running out of room in her trophy case after she picked up MVP honors from the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s North-South All-Star Game Wednesday in Montgomery.

The South All-Stars won the opening game of the doubleheader 3-0 behind a stellar pitching performance from Moten and Baldwin County High’s Madilyn Byrd. Moten then delivered a 3-RBI double as part of an explosive Game 2 that ended in an 11-11 tie.

An Alabama commit, Moten has had a busy offseason following the Trojans’ Red Map trophy as Class 7A state runners-up. After she became the first Daphne representative to win Gatorade Softball Player of the Year honors, Moten was named Miss Softball by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

Game 1: defensive showcase

Coached by Foley’s Mike Ebert, the South All-Stars took the field behind Moten who started the game in the pitcher’s circle with 6 strikeouts compared to 1 hit over 3 innings of work. Byrd, a Florida Atlantic commit, pitched the next 3 innings with 3 strikeouts against 3 hits and 1 walk.

The offense complemented those efforts with a big third inning where Fairhope’s Emma Stewart drew a walk and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Rehobeth’s Maddison Williams.

Ally Supan from Central-Phenix City finished the opening game with 2 strikeouts and 2 hits allowed to help the South All-Star pitchers rack up 10 strikeouts against 6 hits.

Game 2: offensive showcase

After the low-scoring affair that got things started, Game 2 was an offensive explosion where the teams combined for 25 hits, 22 runs and 21 RBIs.

The South All-Stars got out of the gates hot with 4 hits and 5 runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by Moten’s bases-loaded double.

The North All-Stars responded with 9 unanswered runs and held a 9-6 lead after 5 full innings. The North plated 2 runs in the top of the 6th only for the South to score 2 in the bottom of the 6th. With 3 runs in their last at-bats of the 7th, the South evened the score at 11-11 to cut their deficit in the all-time series to 29-25-5.

Moten finished with 3 RBIs at the plate to go along with 5 innings pitched with 10 strikeouts and 0 earned runs to help secure MVP honors.
