Daphne junior Troy Capstraw, already established as one of the nation's top lacrosse goalie recruits, announced his verbal commitment to the University of Virginia Cavaliers last week.

Capstraw is listed at 6' 5" and 205 pounds and has twice been named an Under Armour All-American, thrice named an Inside Lacrosse All-Star and represented the Lower Alabama Bayhawks as the Gulf South Lacrosse League's Defensive MVP this past spring.

At Daphne High School, Capstraw is also part of the National Honor Society and the Peer Helper program and is also a state-qualified diver on the swimming and diving team.

The National Lacrosse Federation ranked him the 108th prospect in the Class of 2024 and the 10th-ranked goalie in the class.

Inside Lacrosse's evaluation from session one of their June 29 tournament rated Capstraw 90 out of 100 and a four-star prospect.

"He's a big righty who does a good job not letting his size translate into being cumbersome, and also uses his frame and positioning to force shooters to pick corners," the evaluation says. "He has the hand speed to catch up to great shots, and once the ball's in his stick, he's proficient in the clearing game."

In rating position-specific traits, Inside Lacrosse gave Capstraw a 4.75 overall score out of 5. His Position and Long Shot Stopping ratings were both 4.75, his Agility, Strength, IQ, Hustle, Stick and Close Shot Stopping all checked in at 4.5 and his Speed, Outlets and Communication rated a 4.25 out of 5.

His commitment to the Cavaliers helps Virginia have the next-best recruits in the Class of 2024, according to Inside Lacrosse's rankings. Army, Harvard, Maryland and Notre Dame have all already received commitments from one five-star and four-star prospect each. With Capstraw's pledge, now the Cavaliers have one five-star commitment and two four-star commitments for an average rating of 4.33 out of 5.

Virginia is one of the country's top college programs and is coming off their 41st NCAA Tournament appearance (third-best in NCAA) where the Cavaliers collected their 57th tournament win (fourth-best in NCAA).

Thomas McConvey, a graduate transfer who will play for Virginia in the 2023 season, was recently selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the National Lacrosse League's 2022 Draft. Last year's squad had eight Cavaliers earn All-American honors from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA).
