DAPHNE, Ala.—Daphne avoided a fifth and deciding set with the visiting Tigers by taking back-to-back wins in games three and four after a 1-2 split made the rest of the night a best-of-three volleyball match at Trojan Gym Thursday.
The 26-24, 23-25, 25-14, 26-24, 6A Area 3, senior-night victory puts DHS at 3-4 with 5-1 Robertsdale still to go. Baldwin County at 1-4 still has three league matches left. 7-0 Fairhope leads the Area 3 race.
“I was proud of my girls for the hard work they put in never giving up and happy for the seniors to get a win in their last home game,” said DHS head coach Edoli Herrion. “They see how well we are capable of playing when we work together out there. They stayed focused, communicated and moved like a team. Now we have to build on this level of play. It was great, too, to have Cameron Milroy back from her injury. She did a great job setting with Suzanne (Evans) and it freed her (Evans) up to hit and block more. It made a big difference and I believe will going forward.”
Baldwin County head coach Mike Tucker said poor serving was the difference.
“I think that was it,” he said. “Morgan (Watkins) had a good night serving, but we need better than we got overall. It killed us. We played very from behind at times. We we’re even great in spurts and rallies coming back. Did it in game one, fell short. Did it in game two. They were ahead of us something like 19-10 in game one and we tied it at 24 all. Had us down in the second game again and we tied it at 17, let them get ahead again but tied it at 23 and finished out to win. But then we just let down in that third game. We have to do better.”
Game four was tied several times with long numerous rallies kept alive by some amazing saves. Daphne took an early lead, but the Tigers tied it at 11, 13, 16 and then made a dramatic comeback from 24-19 with the Trojans at match point to even the score again at 24-24 on a kill by Katelin Crenshaw. But the Trojans won the next two points to take the match.
Evans led Daphne with 12 kills, two blocks, 10 digs and an ace; Jordyn Valrie added six blocks and five kills; Hope Fulton has two blocks and two kills; Sarah Chapman had 13 digs with three aces; Sandra Cross had 13 digs, two aces; Milroy had nine assists and libero Jordan Filotei had 14 digs and three aces.
BCHS was led by Crenshaw with 20 kills, Jennifer Modispacher and Mallorie Murphy added eight kills each, Megan Duncan had five kills while Watkins scored 34 set assists with four Tiger aces from the service line.
