MOBILE, Ala. — Just 12 seconds into the fourth quarter, Daphne junior kicker Diego Guajardo hit a 23-yard field goal. The Trojans’ defense then held on for the 3-0 shutout win over the Warriors at Ladd-Peebles Stadium Thursday.
Daphne head coach Kenny King was not surprised to see both offenses lag behind the defensive units in a season opener.
“We have a lot of determined guys on defense and I am very proud of their efforts tonight,” he said. “I’m a defensive guy myself and I know how important it is to get a stop and get the ball back.
“At this point in the season, we knew we would still be looking for our identity on offense. That means figuring out what we do best and getting it done. It does take time, but we expect to get there and we will.”
Guajardo’s field goal capped the deepest Daphne penetration of the Warrior’s territory all night. Ja’Quan Myles’ 51-yard punt return and a 19-yard swing pass from Chance Newman to fullback Taylor Smith put DHS at the Davison 6-yard line.
The Warriors defense then denied the end zone to the Trojans three times forcing the fourth-and-goal kick.
“Diego did a nice job for us punting tonight, too.” King said. “Special teams on both sides got a good work out. Overall, we had too many penalties and we have to improve. We have to fix that.”
Daphne punted eight times to Davisdon’s nine.
Newman completed 10-of-15 passes for 85 yards. Mike Franklin picked up 58 yards in 20 carries against a stiff Davidson defensive corps.
On the defensive side, Kaleahl Johnson had an interception for Daphne in the first half for an additional stop on the Warriors.
Up next: Daphne (1-0) hosts Class 6A, Region 1 neighboring rival Spanish Fort on Friday. Davidson will host Class 7A, Region 1 and cross-town rival McGill-Toolen Catholic on Friday at Ladd-Peebles.
