Baldwin County well represented at BASS Nation state fishing championships

At last weekend’s Alabama BASS Nation state championship tournament on Logan Martin, the Baldwin County High School fishing team was led by a 47th-place finish by Jed Defee and Luke England who also ranked 35th in the big fish competition with a top haul of 2.12 pounds.

Following the regular season, the Tigers’ top pair of James Travis and Jameson Norris earned their qualification to the national championship tournament after they finished atop the Angler of the Year standings for the Wiregrass Student Trail. The duo will compete in their fifth consecutive Bassmaster High School National Championship July 26-29 on Lake Hartwell.

At the state championships, the Travis-Norris duo was one of eight pairs from Baldwin County High School. They were joined by Fairhope’s Elizabeth Eastman and Walker Jenkins, who made their second straight trip to state, in representing the county.

Defee and England caught the limit of 10 fish on both days and totaled 17.27 pounds for 254 points in the standings. Bryant and Kendrick Johnson complemented the Tigers’ efforts with 19 total fish for 16.66 pounds and 245 points for 56th place.

The Johnson duo was followed closely by a 60th-place finish from Zach Coleman and Billy Jackson who caught 19 fish for 16.43 pounds and 241 points. The top haul from the Coleman-Jackson pair, 3.02 pounds, ranked 20th overall after the dust settled.

The Eastman-Jenkins pairing represented the Pirates in 86th place overall after the limit of 20 fish recorded a haul of 14.26 pounds for 215 points.

In the six-man tournament, Baldwin County’s Team 2 finished eighth after 55 fish registered 43.93 pounds. Baldwin County’s Team 1 caught 54 fish for 39.78 pounds and finished 12th.

The 204 total pairings that competed in the two-day state tournament caught 4,675 fish for a total of 7,797.81 pounds. There were 18 six-fisherman teams that contributed 3,143 fish and 5,255.35 pounds to the overall total.
