Baldwin County football roundup: Spanish Fort outlasts Theodore in double overtime to open region play

Although it was only the second game of the regular season, Spanish Fort got prepared for a marathon after it outlasted Theodore 24-21 in double overtime on the road. It also marked the Toros’ first win toward the playoff race within Class 6A Region 1.

To start the second overtime period, senior kicker Cam Lytle delivered the go-ahead on a 26-yard field goal for his third of the night on top of makes from 30 and 40 yards. Classmate Isaih Bowie sealed the deal on the next play with a fumble recovery to complement a 9-tackle, 1-sack effort.

The victory helped Spanish Fort register its first 2-0 start since 2021 when the Toros finished the regular season 9-1.

Senior EJ King helped lead the Spanish Fort offense with 100 rushing yards on 8 attempts with a touchdown while classmate Bishop Burkhalter racked up 19 total tackles to spearhead the defense on top of 1 tackle for loss and 1 pass breakup. Junior Justin Bonner helped Lytle highlight the Toros’ special teams effort with 146 kickoff return yards including an 85-yarder for a touchdown.

Spanish Fort is set for its home opener in Week 3 when the Baldwin County Tigers bring their 0-2 record to The Hill for a Friday kickoff.

Fairhope Pirates 36, Faith Academy Rams 0

The Fairhope Pirates emphatically returned to the win column with a shutout of Faith Academy.

Senior Desmond Thomas ran to pay dirt three times in the first half alone and finished with 106 rushing yards on 13 carries. Classmate Jahaven Johnson complemented Thomas’ effort with 70 rushing yards on 10 carries.

Fairhope quarterback Jackson Robertson needed only 6 completions to rack up 151 passing yards and a touchdown. Juniors Bryon Martin (3 catches for 75 yards and a touchdown), Andres Hunt (2 catches for 25 yards and a touchdown) and Fisher Southall (3 catches for 64 yards) led the receiving corps.

Senior Rohan Markioli led the Pirate defense with 6 total tackles with classmate Bryce Boothe right behind with 4 total tackles and 1 tackle for loss. Fellow senior Mason Henderson also recorded 4 total tackles between 2 solos and 2 assists.

Week 3 will see Fairhope hit the road to open play within Class 7A Region 1 against the Alma-Bryant Hurricanes who will enter 0-1 following a 25-0 loss to Baker.

MGM Vikings 21, Gulf Shores Dolphins 17

Although it came in a losing effort, Gulf Shores senior running back Kolin Wilson put on a show against Class 7A Mary G. Montgomery with 360 rushing yards on 32 carries with touchdowns of 15 and 65 yards. The Mississippi State commit added 28 kickoff return yards for 388 all-purpose yards on the night.

The Dolphin defense was led by junior classmates JaMichael Garrett and Landon Everett who each racked up 16 total tackles and 2 tackles for loss. Seniors Blaize Thomas and Carter Byrd were not far behind with 9 and 8 total tackles, respectively.

Gulf Shores dropped to an 0-2 start for the first time since 2018 and is scheduled to host the Saraland Spartans in Week 3 to open Class 6A Region 1 play. Saraland improved to 2-0 in Week 2 and opened region play with a 59-6 win over Blount.
