The Baldwin County District Attorney's Office has announced the launch of its inaugural Citizen's Academy, offering residents a unique opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge about the county's criminal justice system.

Applications are now being accepted for the six-week program, which will run every Tuesday night from Aug. 6 through Sept. 10, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The academy will be hosted at various locations throughout Baldwin County, providing participants with firsthand insights into the workings of the District Attorney's Office. The program aims to educate citizens on the journey of a case from arrest to conviction within the Baldwin County Criminal Court System.

Participants will delve into the specialized prosecution units, the benefits of therapeutic court programs and the grand jury process. Additionally, the academy will cover the inner workings of a felony jury trial and other critical services provided by the District Attorney's Office.

In mid-May, before the academy was finalized, Chief Assistant District Attorney Teresa Heinz emphasized that the Citizen's Academy aims to bridge the gap between the public and the judicial system. She noted that many people lack an understanding of how the justice system operates, and this program is designed to provide them with a firsthand experience of the process. Heinz highlighted that participants will gain valuable insights into the functions and responsibilities of the District Attorney's Office, enhancing their knowledge and fostering a more informed community.

To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years old, hold a valid driver’s license and be willing to undergo a background check. Interested individuals can register online at https://services.baldwincountyal.gov/DA/dacitizenacademy/. The deadline for applications is July 31.

Don't miss this chance to learn about the intricate processes of the Baldwin County District Attorney's Office and contribute to a more informed and engaged community.
