The Baldwin County Board of Education is set to hold three public input meetings concerning redistricting plans for several schools in the Elberta, Central Baldwin and Daphne feeder patterns.
The plans were briefly discussed at the Board of Education work session meeting on Oct. 21. The Central Baldwin and Daphne feeder patterns have new schools under construction that are set to open within the next school year.
Central Baldwin also saw the opening of the new Silverhill Elementary at the beginning of this year.
Superintendent Eddie Tyler said the redistricting will allow a more balanced number of students at each school and will prevent additional portable classrooms on some campuses.
The school system tries to keep students in the same patterns if possible, meaning a student typically wouldn't be moved from an Elberta district school to a Robertsdale district school, but "sometimes it has to be done."
Grandfathering, allowing a student to remain at their current school, could be a possibility in some cases. Tyler said the public meetings generally cover everything in the redistricting plans.
"We generally try to make it where parents do understand," he said. "They're not always happy and I can't make them all happy. … We try to make it as friendly as we can."
Meetings begin at 5:30 p.m. with a presentation from board leadership and a question-and-answer period afterwards.
The meeting for Elberta's feeder pattern, which covers Elberta Elementary, Elberta Middle, Elberta High and Summerdale, will be held on Nov. 4 at Elberta High School, 13355 Main St. in Elberta. Assistant Superintendent Joseph Sharp will present information on the district.
For Central Baldwin's feeder pattern, which includes Loxley Elementary, Elsanor Elementary, Rosinton Elementary, Robertsdale Elementary and Silverhill Elementary, will be held on Nov. 12. The location is tentatively set for Robertsdale Elementary School, 1 Cub Drive in Robertsdale, with a presentation led by Assistant Superintendent Marty McRae.
The meeting for Daphne's feeder pattern, which contains Daphne Elementary, Belforest, Daphne East and Daphne Middle, will be held Nov. 13 with a tentative location being set for Baldwin County Virtual School at 605 U.S. Highway 98 in Daphne. Assistant Superintendent Shannon McCurdy will lead the presentation.
