Auburn softball receives commitment from Orange Beach state champion Wilson

Three-time champion, two-time all-state selection has already played big role in Makos’ early dynasty

Orange Beach junior infielder and three-time state champion Daigle Wilson announced on Monday that after her time with the Makos, she’ll continue her academic and athletic careers at Auburn University.

“I want to thank my family, coaches, and teammates for always supporting me,” Wilson wrote on social media. “I would like to give God all the glory. It is only through Him that this is possible. War Eagle!”

It was a quick turnaround after the Class of 2025’s contact period with college coaches opened on Sept. 1. Wilson is one of many sought-after recruits from Orange Beach who checked in as the seventh-ranked infielder and No. 21 overall prospect for her class according to Extra Inning Softball.

As part of a busy summer playing with the Birmingham Thunderbolts, who just missed out on a third straight Premier Girls Fastpitch National Championship, Wilson also participated in camps at colleges including Troy, Alabama, Southern Miss and UAB before the contact period opened. Earlier this month, she was seen on visits to Southern Miss and Florida Atlantic.

The Mako shortstop has also played a crucial role in Orange Beach’s early softball dynasty as a two-time all-state selection with big contributions on the state championship stage.

As an eighth grader, Wilson drew the walk that preceded Ava Hodo’s walk-off home run in extra innings of the 2021 state finals before she played the heroine as a freshman and delivered the walk-off base hit that clinched the 2022 state title.

As a sophomore, Wilson collected her 100th career stolen base during the Gulf Coast Classic Tournament in March before leading the Makos with seven runs scored in four state tournament games en route to a third consecutive Blue Map trophy in May.

Orange Beach’s run at a fourth straight state championship is set to begin on Feb. 15, 2024, alongside the other Alabama High School Athletic Association representatives.

The Auburn Tigers finished 43-19 overall in 2023 with a 15-9 mark in the Southeastern Conference. The 43 wins and league record were both program bests since 2017. After a semifinal exit in the SEC Tournament, Auburn went on to make its first appearance in the NCAA Regional final since 2019.

Maddie Penta became the first Tiger hurler recognized as the SEC Pitcher of the Year as one of three All-SEC nods alongside Denver Bryant and Nelia Peralta. Penta and Peralta also represented Auburn on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s All-Southeast Region Teams as the school’s 33rd and 34th selections.
