The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce unveiled the official artwork for the 37th-annual Jubilee Festival of Arts in Daphne, which is scheduled for later this year.
The winning art was made by featured artist Rianna Turner, who after graduating from the University of Mobile taught painting along the coast and throughout the United States before returning to Mobile to establish her own studio with her husband, Steven, and their three children, Ellyana, Luke and Landry Claire, who she says on her website all frequently “help” with her artwork. She has earned recognition and awards throughout her career, and her work can be found in galleries across the Gulf Coast and even on children’s clothing and national puzzle brands.
The official artwork for the festival was unveiled in a ceremony on July 11, with Turner saying the inspiration for her art comes from the Mobile Bay jubilees, a naturally occurring phenomenon caused primarily by up-wellings or upward movement of oxygen-poor bottom waters forcing bottom-type fish and crustaceans ashore. It’s primarily flounders that congregate, and at other times it’s a “shrimp jubilee” or “crab jubilee,” but generally all three species plus a few other fish and eels are involved. Jubilees occur only in two places in the world, Tokyo Bay in Japan and Mobile Bay.
“Just like a party or festival, a jubilee brings an exhilarating sense of anticipation and celebration. My goal was to essentially bottle up that joy (and a little confetti) and use it all as paint!” Turner said in a press release.
This year’s rendition of the Jubilee Festival of Arts is scheduled for Oct. 18-19 in Lott Park in Daphne and will feature over 100 local artists, along with food vendors and live music.
