Renowned artist and Fairhope native Dean Mosher spoke at the Fairhope Public Library on Saturday as part of the Fairhope Museum of History’s speaker series.
During the speaker event, Mosher discussed the history and several stories of Craig Sheldon, the artist, sculptor and writer known as the mastermind behind Fairhope’s “Storybook Castle.” The stories Mosher shared with the crowd on Saturday included Sheldon’s early life, his encounters with the law and the beginnings of his castle in Fairhope.
Following World War II, the creative Sheldon, who was tired of the small apartment life he and his family have been living in in Fairhope, decided to move and build by hand what is now “Sheldon Castle,” which consisted of rooms for his children as well as his office. It is where he wrote plays and “Knee Deep in Fly Creek,” a newspaper column printed in The Fairhope Courier.
Mosher, inspired by Sheldon, built his own castle on the property, which is where he resides with his wife. His home, now referred to as “Mosher Castle,” has also served as his personal studio for the past 40 years.
Several artifacts surrounding Craig Sheldon are also currently on display at the Fairhope Museum of History.
