The 2024 Alabama Scenic River Trail (ASRT) Great Alabama 650, the longest paddle race in the United States, is set to conclude in Baldwin County at the picturesque Fort Morgan Pier and Boat Launch.

This grueling 650-mile race, beginning at Weiss Lake in northeast Alabama, will conclude on the shores of Fort Morgan, with participants expected to reach the finish line by 2 p.m. on Oct. 1.

The race will begin at 10 a.m. on Sept. 21 from Weiss Lake challenging 20 determined paddlers to navigate a demanding route through Alabama's diverse waterways. Over the course of 10 days, competitors will traverse rivers and lakes, including the Coosa River, Logan Martin Lake and the Alabama River, all the way to the Mobile Bay. This journey through 17 counties will test their endurance, strength and strategic abilities as they maneuver through a variety of water conditions using non-motorized craft such as kayaks, canoes or stand-up paddleboards.

Baldwin County and Fort Morgan are poised to be the grand finale for this endurance race. As the final destination, Fort Morgan not only serves as the endpoint of the challenging course but also as a significant highlight of the competition, drawing attention to its scenic beauty and historic significance. The finish line at the Fort Morgan Pier and Boat Launch provides a striking backdrop for the conclusion of the race, where participants will strive to cross before the deadline of Oct. 1.

The event's route, carefully designed to showcase Alabama's natural beauty, will guide paddlers through 12 major waterways and numerous counties. Racers will experience the full spectrum of Alabama's waterways, starting from the serene Weiss Lake and making their way through rapid rivers and tranquil lakes, before finally navigating the intricate channels leading to the Gulf of Mexico. The transition from the varied inland waters to the open expanse of Mobile Bay presents a unique challenge, emphasizing the paddlers' adaptability and resilience.

The Great Alabama 650 is divided into three competitive categories: Male Solo, Female Solo and Two-Person Tandem. Each category winner will receive a $2,000 prize, adding to the competitive spirit of the race. This event, known for its demanding nature and the camaraderie it fosters among participants, promises to highlight Alabama's significant role as a premier paddling destination.
