Alex White, a member of Boy Scout Troop 78, recently received his Eagle Scout Award after completing all requirements for the top scouting honor and completion of his service projects.
Alex received the award during a ceremony at First Presbyterian Church in Bay Minette, the sponsoring organization and the meeting place for the troop.
As part of the requirements to reach the rank of Eagle, a Scout must earn 21 merit badges. The Scout must also serve in leadership positions in the troop and plan, develop, organize and carry out a service project.
The son of Darryl and Lori White, Alex joined Cub Scouts on Oct. 30, 2002 and earned his Arrow of Light and joined the Boy Scouts in 2006. He earned a total of 29 merit badges and for his scout project, Alex designed and built a new observation tower for the Baldwin County High School Tiger Band.
“I have been in Boy Scouts since I was in second grade, so becoming an Eagle Scout was a big accomplishment for me,” Alex said. It’s also something of a family tradition. “My older brother Eric is also an Eagle Scout and my younger brother Evan is very close to becoming one as well.”
During his time in Scouts, he has served in several leadership roles, including Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Librarian, Troop Guide and Quarter Master.
A recent graduate of Baldwin County High School, Alex was the percussion leader for the BCHS Tiger Band and was a member of the National Honor Society. He is now enrolled at the University of South Alabama, where he is a member of the USA Jaguar Band.
“Alex did an outstanding job of planning, organizing, and executing the Eagle project,” said Scoutmaster Craig Smith. “By selecting the new band stand at BCHS, he was able to benefit his school and troop all in one, which the Eagle committee thought was outstanding.”
Once construction of the tower was complete, Baldwin EMC employees helped erect the tower.
Smith praised White for his leadership skills and for the example he has set for fellow Scouts. “He did a great thing for the other members of the troop by providing them an excellent example of what an Eagle Scout project should look like and what an Eagle Scout should be,” Smith said.
