The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Marine Patrol Division is preparing to launch its 2025 season of Boating Basics and License Courses, offering free in-person instruction at locations throughout the state.
The courses, designed for both new and experienced boaters, allow participants to learn directly from ALEA Troopers and receive hands-on training tailored to local waterways per a news release. Each session provides safety instruction and practical information for operating vessels on Alabama’s lakes, rivers and coastal waters.
Citizens who complete the Boating Basics course will receive a certificate by mail once Troopers submit their information to the Agency’s Vessel Registration Unit. The Driver License Division will then add the vessel class endorsement to the individual’s Alabama Driver License. Officials said in the release that it can take up to 10 business days before participants can go online to https://alabamadl.alea.gov or visit a county probate office to purchase an updated license.
Children 12 and older may qualify for a vessel operator’s license, although those under 14 are not allowed to operate a boat alone.
A one-time $5 cash application fee is required, and there is a $36.25 issuance fee for the license.
For more information or to register, residents should contact the Marine Patrol instructor listed for their preferred class.
