Alabama's hospitals contribute more than $25 billion annually to the state's economy according to a news release, serving as both a healthcare backbone and a driving force for job creation.
With 114 hospitals operating around the clock, these facilities not only provide essential medical services but also act as economic pillars, often ranking as the largest employers in their communities.
Statewide, hospitals support more than 143,000 jobs, including 77,557 directly employed hospital workers, generating a labor impact of $10.4 billion. In 2023, they delivered care through 564,939 inpatient stays, more than 6.4 million outpatient visits and more than 2.1 million emergency room visits — offering critical, lifesaving services 24 hours a day.
"Our hospitals are vital not only to the state's healthcare system but also to the economic health of Alabama," president and CEO of East Alabama Health and chairman of the Alabama Hospital Association Board of Trustees Laura Grill said in the release. "They are crucial drivers of economic development – supporting job creation, recruitment and business growth. A thriving hospital network is essential for attracting and retaining businesses, ensuring that Alabama remains a competitive and sustainable place to live and work. Our hospitals are dedicated to improving the lives of all Alabamians and strengthening the state's economy."
Beyond patient care, hospitals contribute to community well-being through workforce training, disaster response and charitable programs. Many collaborate with local organizations, expand healthcare access and support public health initiatives aimed at building stronger communities.
"Alabama hospitals are the backbone of our communities, ensuring access to high-quality care while also driving economic growth," said Donald E. Williamson, MD, president of the Alabama Hospital Association. "Beyond patient care, hospitals are committed to enhancing the health and well-being of the communities they serve, strengthening local economies and investing in the overall quality of life for all residents."
The economic impact data was compiled using IMPLAN's Economic Impact Analysis based on 2023 hospital statistics. More information about how Alabama's hospitals support their communities can be found at wearealabamahospitals.org.
