The Hardy E. Calloway Memorial Fund has been established to present a deserving Fairhope High student with a $1,000 scholarship each year. He graduated from Fairhope High School in 1960. He was President of the Student Council, Captain of the 1959 state-championship football team and Mr. Fairhope High.
Calloway graduated from Army Armor Officer Candidate School at the top of his OCS class in 1967. He went on to flight school at Fort Knox, Kentucky and flew the Army Cobra Helicopter. While on a mission in Long An Province, his helicopter was shot down on March 18, 1969.
Hardy will be loved and remembered by his family and friends forever. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism in combat, the Purple Heart and two Air Medals for heroism in flight. His service and sacrifice is remembered with honor on The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. on Panel 29W, Line 66.
On the 50th anniversary of his death, his wife Dee announced the memorial-scholarship fund in his honor.
“It has been 50 years since your Army Cobra Helicopter was shot down. You have never been forgotten and not one day has gone by that you were not remembered and missed. Our hearts will carry you forever. We also remember your co-pilot William (Spencer) Lund.”
