Toros stay undefeated in Region 1 play with home win over Jackets 35-14

SPANISH FORT , Ala – The Toros charged ahead early to build a 21-0 lead on touchdown runs by Brendon Byrd, (10-yard run) and Johnny Morris (19 and 37 yards) in the second quarter. The McGill-Toolen Catholic Yellow Jackets cut it to 21-7 with two minutes left in the first half on Braylon McReynolds’ two-yard run.

Spanish Fort scored again just before the half on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Byrd to Khamron Jackson. With Lucas Breax’s four extra points, SFHS led 28-7.

Morris added his third rushing touchdown on the final play of the third quarter, a 31-yard run. MTCHS quarterback Aaron Carabin connected with Anthony Eager on a 34-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the fourth quarter. Michael Shine scored the Jackets’ PATs.

Spanish Fort head coach Ben Blackmon said he was pleased with the outcome and credited a good week of solid preparation

“I want to drive home how we focused and prepared,” he said. “The energy, how we were paying attention to the details. And how we prepared for a great back like Braylon (McReynolds). And it’s got to be like that as we go forward.”

He added that the week’s preparation was the best week of practice that his team has had all year.

“And it showed on the field by getting everybody ready in all three phases. I was so proud of our positive energy all week and our ability to meet the challenge. We knew we couldn’t give up the home run to a very explosive offense.

"And really proud of our defense. They kept them contained and forced some turnovers that we were able to captitalize on. That was huge. And our special teams did a good job all night. They worked hard all week to improve and it showed tonight.”

The Toros (8-1, 6-0) will wrap up the regular season Friday, Oct. 27 at Daphne. Spanish Fort will visit the Class 7A Eastern Shore rival to finish the regular season before hosting a first-round, Class 6A playoff game. The Jackets will travel to Dothan for their final regular season game.
