On July 18 around 11:15 a.m., Fort Morgan Fire Rescue posted an update on the wildfire saying the fire covered around 250 acres. They also said that "Fish and Wildlife have deployed 16 crew members with various firefighting equipment. Alabama Forestry has sent 6 firefighters with equipment, along with Fort Morgan Fire."
Fort Morgan Fire Rescue also wanted to remind residnets and visitors that smoke will linger in the area for several days.
Orginal story July 17: A wildfire ignited earlier today, July 17, north of State Highway 180 near the intersection with Cortez Street in Fort Morgan, prompting a multi-agency response.
According to reports, the blaze is believed to have started by a lightning strike.
The Gulf Shores Police Department announced on Facebook around 4:30 p.m. that "Highway 180, West Fort Morgan Rd, is shut down west of Rookery due to a large brush fire. Residents and visitors are asked to stay clear of the area to allow emergency vehicles to get through."
Drivers in the area should exercise caution as smoke may impact visibility on State Highway 180 near Cortez Street.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and providing updates as efforts to contain the fire continue.
Update July 17: Gulf Shores Police Department posted on Facebook Wednesday evening that while the fire is still burning, the roads are open again. They asked for those passing through to exercise caution.
